겨울딸기(장미과)

내 어릴 적 초등학교 3학년 국어 교과서에 겨울딸기 이야기가 실려 있었다.

한 겨울에 아프신 노모가 딸기가 먹고 싶다는 말에 효심이 지극한 아들이 눈밭을 헤메는데

호랑이가 그 효심에 감동을 해서 효자를 등에 태워서 딸기 있는 곳에 데려다 주었다는 이야기다.

 

그 때는 무슨 딸기가 겨울에 다 있노? 하고 생각했었다.  

뭐 그 시절에야 이 녀석의 존재에 대하여 알려질 리 만무였겠지만 겨울딸기를 볼 때마다 어릴 적 국어책 속의 이야기가 떠오른다.

 

제주에는 겨울에도 딸기가 익는다.

8월 한창 더위에 하얗게 꽃을 피워서 한겨울에 이렇게 붉게 익는 제주 특산식물이다.

해가 잘 드는 한라산 숲이나 곶자왈 숲 바닥에 지금 한창 딸기가 탱글탱글 여물고 있다.  

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

꽃은 6 ~ 8월에 백색으로 피고 지름이 1cm로, 4 ~ 10개가 달리며 총상꽃차례로, 가지 끝 또는 잎겨드랑이에 달리고,

꽃받침잎은 피침형으로, 꽃잎과 길이가 비슷하며, 작은꽃자루는 털이 있다. 작년 8월에 담은 꽃이다.

 

 

 

 

 

 

열매는 붉은색으로, 9 ~ 10월에 성숙한다. 열매가 가을에서부터 겨울에 익기 때문에 겨울딸기라고 한다.

 

 

 

잎은 어긋나기하며, 둥근 단엽으로 예두 또는 둔두이고 깊은 심장저로, 가장자리가 얕은 결각상으로 갈라진다.

 

 

 

잎 뒷면은 융모가 밀생하며 맥이 돌출한다. 줄기에도 밀모가 가득하다.

 

 

 

줄기와 잎자루에 누른 밀모로 덮혀 있고 줄기에 드물게 가시도 있다.
