호자나무(꼭두서니과) Damnacanthus indicus C.F.Gaertn.

7월 어느 날 제주의 숲에서 딱 한 그루 만났던 녀석이다.

꽃도 열매도 볼 기회가 없었는데 이번에 한라수목원에서 열매를 원 없이 보았다.

자생이 아니라 아쉬움은 있지만 그래도 녀석의 열매를 보았다는 데 의미를 두어 본다.  

호자나무와 많이 닮은 수정목도 궁금하였는데 마침 한 그루 심겨져 있어서 둘을 비교할 수 있는 좋은 기회를 얻을 수 있었다.

 

꽃과 잎이 호자덩굴과 너무 흡사하다. 가늘고 긴 가시가 호랑이도 울고 갈 것만 같이 날카롭다. 그래서 虎刺 나무라던가.

꽃은 흰 색의 깔때기 모양인데, 초여름이 되면 잎겨드랑이나 가지 끝에 1-2개씩이 달린다.

열매는 작은 공 모양의 핵과로 가을에 붉게 익는다. 열매 끝에 

꽃받침 열편이 남아있다.

 

 

 

 주로 산지의 나무 그늘에서 자라며, 한국에서는 홍도와 제주도 등지에 분포하고 있다.

 

 

 

 

 

 

가시는  길이 5~20mm 로 잎과 같거나 잎보다 길다. 잎겨드랑이에서 위 아래로 마주나기로 나 있다.

잎은 어른 검지손톱만한 크기의 달걀 모양으로 마주나 있는데 혁질이며 윤이 난다.

 

수정목 잎은 길이 1.5~4cm, 폭 10~20mm, 호자나무는 길이 1~2.5cm, 폭 7~20mm로 호자나무 잎이 많이 작다.

수정목 

가시는 길이 3~10mm이며 보통 5~6mm,

호자나무 가시는 길이 5~20mm로 잎의 길이와 같거나 길다.

 

 

가지는 많이 갈라지면서 옆으로 퍼지고 어린 가지에 짧은 털이 있다.
