숲속에 자라는 낙엽 떨기나무로 높이 2m가량이며, 가지에 가시가 난다. 잎은 어긋나며, 도란형, 난형이고, 얇게 3갈래로 갈라진다.
잎 양면에 털이 없고 표면은 광택이 있으며, 상반부 가장자리에는 샘털이 있다. 우리나라 백두산, 중국 동북부에 분포한다.
몽골에서도 대형마트 주차장에 심겨져 있는 녀석을 담은 적이 있는데
자생의 모습은 만나기는 어려운 것 같다.
열매자루와 잎자루, 잎가장자리에 부드러운 털과 드물게 샘털도 보인다.
열매에도 샘털이 드문드문 보이기도 한다
어린가지에는 잔 가시가 더 뚜렷하게 나타난다
