어라? 개정향풀을 담고 지나는 길 옆에 못자리가 이상하다.
뭐지?? 하면서 차창 밖으로 고개를 빼는데 .......우와~! 염생식물이다.
논이 아니라 그 곳은 지금은 활용하지 않은 폐기한 염전이었다.
염전도 처음 보는데다가 염생식물이라니...이런 횡재가 다 있다냐.
반가운 마음에 꽃동무 두분은 냅다 도랑을 건너 질렀고 나도 잰 걸음으로 다가가니
히야~! 마디마디 잘록잘록한 퉁퉁마디다.
함초라고도 불리는 퉁퉁마디는
줄기가 다육성으로 퉁퉁하고 마디마다 튀어나온 풀이라 하여 ‘퉁퉁마디’라고 부르는데,우리나라 서해안이나 남해안, 섬 지방의 바닷물이 닿는 해안이나 갯벌, 염전 주위에 무리지어 자란다
함초는 봄부터 여름까지는 줄기와 가지가 진한 녹색이다가 가을이 되면 진한 빨간색으로 단풍이 든다.
가을철 온통 빨간색 물감을 쏟아 부은 듯 함초, 나문재, 칠면초 같은 것으로 덮여 있는 해안 풍경 사진을 접하게 되는데
그 모습은 가히 장관이었다.
퉁퉁마디의 재에는 많은 양의 칼륨이 들어 있는데 옛날에는 유리 제조에 사용했다고 한다.
요즈음에는 바다의 산삼이라 칭하며 건강식품으로 개발하여 인기가 높은 모양이다.
비록 사용하지 않은 염전이지만 염전 둑은 바닷물이 증발한 소금의 하얀 결정체로 반짝거렸고
염전에 가두어진 물에 비친 퉁퉁마디와 해홍초의 반영과 어우어린 아름다운 정경은 육지의 아짐을 흥분하게 만들었다.
벌써 어둠이 내리기 시작하는 때라서 녀석의 그린자를 살려 담는데는 한계가 있었다.
해가 있었더라면 멋진 그림을 만들 수 있었을텐데 하면서 해 좋은 날 다시 와야겠다고 목포의 꽃동무는 아쉬워 한다.
이파리 하나를 따다가 씹어보니 하이고야~! 짜다. 마치 소금은 입에 넣은 것 처럼.
고요하고 잔잔한 염전 수면은 유리판을 덮어 놓은 듯 매끈하기만 하였다.
