염생식물의 하나로 바닷가 갯벌이나 모래땅 등의 소금기 있는 곳에서 자라는 한해살이풀이다.
육질은 온통 수분으로 다육성이며, 잎끝이 바늘처럼 뾰족하다. 키는 10~40㎝ 정도이며 가지가 많이 갈라진다.
수송나물로 정리 해 두었었는데 열매의 닭벼슬 같은 화피편으로 봐서 나래수송나물 수정한다
솔장다리 열매에도 화피편에 얇은 막질 비늘 날개가 있는데 전초가 더 가늘고 위로 크게 자라며 잎도 바늘처럼 가는 점이 다르다.
결실기에 화피편은 짧은 돌기를 내거나 거의 불변 ............수송나물

잎은 호생하고 육질이며 원주형이고 짙은 녹색이며 솔잎처럼 가늘고 길이 1-3cm로서 끝이 뾰죽하며
처음에는 연하고 부드럽지만 나중에 줄기와 함께 딱딱해져서 따끔할 만큼 가시같이 된다.
포과는 연골질(軟骨質)의 꽃받침으로 싸여 있으며 절두이고 난형으로서 암술대가 남아 있으며 1개의 종자가 들어 있고
종자의 수명이 짧다. 배(胚)는 나선형이다.
