노각나무(차나무과 노각나무속) Stewartia koreana Nakai ex Rehder

하얀 꽃이 함박나무꽃보다 조금 작고 해당화 크기랑 비슷한 정도로 멀리서도 쉽게 눈에 띈다.

 수피가 매끈하면서 양버즘나무 처럼 얼룩 무늬가 있어서 무척 아름답다.

수피 무늬가 아름답고 재질이 단단하여 노루의 뿔이라는 <노각>나무 이름을 얻었다고 한다.

이태 전 6월 6일 가야산에 올랐을 때 피기 시작했으니까 아마 지금쯤 한창 피고 있겠다.

꽃은 양성으로서 6-7월에 피며 새가지의 기부에서 액생하고

화경은 길이 1.5-2cm로서 털이 없으며 포는 난형 또는 원형이고 길이 4-7mm이다.

꽃받침잎은 둥글며 융모가 있고 꽃잎은 백색이며 도란형  5-6개이며 길이 2.5-3.5cm로서

가장자리가 약간 파상이고 자방에 견모가 있으며 암술대는 5개로 갈라지지만 서로 합쳐지고 수술은 5개이다.

 

 

  

 

 

 열매는 5각형의 삭과로 남아 있는 암술대와 함께 길이 2~2.2cm로 10월에 황적색으로 익으며 견모가 있다.

잎은 길이 4~10cm, 나비 2-5cm로서 타원형 또는 넓은 타원형이고 호생하며

표면에 견모가 있으나 없어지고 뒷면에 잔털이 있으며 가장자리에는 세치상의 톱니가 있다. 

 

 

높이 7-15m이고 소지에 털이 없다. 수피가 벗겨져 흑황색 얼룩무늬가 있어 아름답다.

아래 수피는 어린 유목이라서 얼룩이 보이지 않는다
