동백나무(차나무과) 열매 Camellia japonica L.

열매 자료를 정리하려고 동백나무 열매를 찾으니 정리를 해 두지 않았다.

기억을 더듬어서 폴더를 뒤지니 이렇게 푸르딩딩한 것밖에 없다.

자색으로 익은 열매를 만났을 때는 시큰둥하게 보아 넘기다가 이렇게 필요할 때는 후회가 된다. 엥~!

 

작은 자두처럼 생긴 동백나무 열매를 보면 신맛이 나는 듯 입에 침이 고이지만 이 녀석 열매는 먹을 수는 없다

가을에 자주색으로 익으면서 껍질이 벌어지면 커다란 씨앗이 3~4개 들어 있는데

옛날에는 그 씨앗으로 기름을 짜서 여인들의 머릿기름으로 사용하여 머리를 정갈하게 매만졌다고 한다

 

기름이 귀하던 그 시절에는 호롱불을 밝히는데도 사용했다고 하니 천연 원료로는 아주 그만인 셈이다.

최근에는 동백 열매에서 추출한 동백유를 의료용이나 공업용, 식용으로도 이용하기도 한단다
