전국의 깊은 산 풀밭이나 덤불숲에 자라는 여러해살이풀이다.
높이 50~100cm, 잎자루 아래쪽에서 시작되는 뚜렷한 날개가 있다. 뿌리줄기는 굵고 옆으로 벋는다.
뿌리잎은 꽃이 필 때 마르며, 줄기잎은 어긋나고 잎몸은 난상 삼각형으로
밑부분은 심장 모양이고 끝은 갑자기 뾰족해지며 가장자리에 불규칙한 톱니가 있다.
잎자루는 길이 3~14cm, 작은 날개가 있으며 줄기의 날개로 흐르며, 줄기 위쪽으로 갈수록 짧아지고 날개가 없어진다.
국내에 분포하는 취나물속(Saussurea) 식물들 중에서 줄기에 가장 넓은 날개가 있다.
가을이 되면 벌레들이 잎을 뜯어 먹어서 성한 게 없다.
넓은 난형의 잎은 끝이 갑자기 좁아져서 꼬리처럼 된다
