중국 원산이며 우리나라 남부지방에서 과수원에 과수로 재배하거나
정원에 관상용으로 식재하는 상록성 작은큰키나무로 높이 4~6m 정도로 자란다. 가지에 길고 억센 가시가 있다.
열매를 식용, 약용하는데, 과일로 먹기보다는 주로 유자청을 만드는 데 이용한다.
