탱자나무처럼 크고 억센 가시를 가지고 있는 녀석이다.
암수딴그루로 8-9월 여름에 꽃을 피운다.
잎은 난형이나 광난형으로 얼핏 사스레나무와 비슷한 듯 하지만 끝이 더 뾰족하고 측맥이 4-5쌍으로 크기가 작다.
