가시연꽃(수련과 가시연속) Euryale ferox Salisb.

지름 20~120cm의 대형 잎이 시골 마당에 깔아놓았던 멍석을 연상시킨다.
잎 표면은 광택이 나며 주름져 있고, 뒷면은 흑자색으로 잎의 양면 잎맥 위에 가시가 있다. 
가시가 돋은 긴 꽃자루 끝에 지름 4cm 정도 되는 밝은 자주색 꽃이 1개 피는데, 낮에는 벌어졌다가 밤에는 닫힌다
 경기도 이남의 중남부 지방에서 자라며, 중국, 일본, 타이완, 인도 등에 분포한다.
 
여러해살이풀인 수련이나 연꽃과 달리 한해살이풀이다.
