연꽃(연꽃과 연꽃속) Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn.

몇 년 전부터 사찰 진입로에 연못을 만들고 연꽃을 가득 심어 놓았다.

이제는 연꽃이 잘 어우러져서 이맘 때 쯤이면 장관을 만들고 있는데

절에 들르러 오가는 사람들이 잠시 가던 길을 멈추고 연꽃 가득한 연못에 마음은 빼앗기곤 한다

 

사찰의 탱화나 건축물에는 어김없이 연꽃 문양이 등장을 한다  

연꽃은 아무리 냄새가 나는 더러운 진흙 속에서도 그 더러운 물에 젖지 않고 고운 꽃을 피워낸다.  

 

부처는 이런 연꽃의 생태적 모습에서 온갖 번뇌와 고통과 검은 유혹이 난무하는 인간 세계에서

그에 굴하지 않고 물듦이 없이 맑게 살아가야 할 바람직한 인간상을 발견했다고 한다.

그래서 불가의 그림이나 문양에서는 연꽃이 등장한다.
