태백의 고랭지 채소밭에는 백겨자가 노랗게 꽃을 피워서 멋진 그림을 만들어 주고 있다.
강원도 태백 지역을 스쳐다니면서 한 여름에 웬 유채꽃을 이렇게 피워놓았는가? 하고 갸웃거렸는데
잎은 쌈채소로 겨자씨는 향신료로 이용하는 백겨자라고 한다.
백겨자(화이트 머스터드)는 지중해가 원산지인 한해살이풀로 향신료로 이용하는 것은 씨이다.
흑겨자보다 매운 맛이 덜하여 향이 부드럽고 색깔이 옅어서 농가에서 재배를 많이하는데 농가에서는 서양고추냉이로 부르기도 한다.
농촌진흥청의 연구에 의하면 고냉지 채소 재배에 피해를 주는 사탕무끼스트선충 방제에 백겨자를 재배하는 것이 90%의 방제 효과가 있다고 하여 배추 파종 전에 풋거름용과 병충해 뱅제용으로 백겨자를 심는다고 한다
