이 녀석은 가장 먼저 단풍이 붉게 들어서 가을을 알린다. 그래서 <붉>나무란 이름을 얻었으리라.
옻나무과 다른 녀석들과 달리 엽축에 날개가 있어 확인이 쉬워서 안심하고 만질 수 있다.
헌데 오늘 한 가지 새로운 사실을 알았다.
열매를 덮고 있는 흰 고체 결정체가 바로 산기와 소금기가 있는 시고 짠 물질이라는 거다.
열매의 기재문을 보면 <산염기>가 있다는 기록이 있는 데 바로 이걸 두고 하는 말인 것 같다.
꽃동무가 일러준 그 열매의 물기가 있는 흰가루의 맛을 보니 정말 엄청 짜가웠다.
그런데 <산>이란 신맛이 나야하는데 짠맛이 강해서 그런지 신맛이 느껴지지 않는다.
교통이 불편하던 시절 산지에 사는 사람들은 소금 대용이기도 하였다는 붉나무 열매다.
과피를 덮고 있는 흰 물질은 물기를 머금고 있었는데 액체 상태에서고체상태의 결정체로 변해서 마르면 하얀 가루가 된다.
근데 이 짭잘한 가루는 정작 붉나무에는 어떤 역할을 하는 걸까?
엽축에 날개가 있다. 잎에 달리는 불룩불룩한 벌레집을 오배자라 하여 한약재로 귀하게 쓰인다고 한다.
민방이나 한방에 쓰이기도 하고 천연염색의 염료로 쓰기도 한다.
