큰메꽃(메꽃과 메꽃속) Calystegia sepium (L.) R.Br.

국내의 큰메꽃이라 하는 것에 대한 의문이 항상 있었다.

메꽃과 구분되는 확실한 차이점을 확인이 쉽지 않앗기 때문이다

아래는 생물자원관의 큰메꽃에 대한 정보이다.

저지대 풀밭이나 길가에 자라는 덩굴성 여러해살이풀이다. 전체에 털이 거의 없다. 땅속줄기는 옆으로 벋으면서 갈라진다. 줄기는 다른 물체에 감긴다. 잎은 어긋나며, 삼각상 난형 또는 삼각형으로 길이 4~8cm, 폭 3~7cm, 끝은 뾰족하고, 밑은 2갈래로 갈라지는 심장형이며, 가장자리는 밋밋하다. 잎자루는 길이 3~5cm이다. 꽃은 6~8월에 피는데 잎겨드랑이에서 나온 길이 4~6cm의 꽃대에 1개씩 달린다. 꽃받침잎은 5갈래로 갈라진다. 꽃부리는 깔때기 모양, 지름 4~5cm, 분홍색이다. 수술은 5개로 꽃부리보다 훨씬 짧다. 열매는 삭과, 9~10월에 익는다. 우리나라 경기도 이북에서 자라며, 전 세계 온대지역에 분포한다. 메꽃에 비해 잎은 삼각상 난형 또는 삼각형으로 보다 넓고, 끝은 뾰족하다. 뿌리를 식용, 약용한다. 넓은잎메꽃, 음양곽메꽃이라고도 한다
