고구마(메꽃과 나팔꽃속) Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam.

영락없는 나팔꽃이다.

고구마 밭을 지날 때마다 혹시나 꽃이 피지 않았나 기웃거리곤 했는데 한 번도 마주치지 못하였었다.

헌데 그 고구마 꽃을 멀리 제주도에 가서 볼 줄이야. 아 참~! 고구마가 처음 들어 온 곳이 제주도라 했다.

 

식물이 꽃을 일찍 피우거나 소나무가 솔방울을 많이 다는 것은 환경으로 부터 생존의 위협을 받을 때라 한다.

환경이 좋지 않으니 빨리 꽃을 피우고 열매를 많이 맺어서 자식을 많이 퍼뜨리려는 조건반사 같은 것이라고나 할까.

 

이 녀석도 도로 옆 시멘트로 만든 조경용 화단에 심겨져 있었는데 제 살기에는 힘들었던 모양이다.

 

 

고구마는 영조시대에 일본으로부터 들여오게 되었는데 부산 동래와 제주도에서 처음 재배를 하였다고 한다.

고구마는 겨울 구황작물로 중요한 역할을 했다고 한다. 사실 내 어릴 적에도 고구마로 한 끼를 떼우곤 했으니.

 

 

추수한 고구마는 얼지 않도록 방 윗목에 왕겨를 채운 가마니 속에 넣어서 겨울을 나곤 했는데

긴 겨울 밤 입이 궁금할 때 꺼내어서 깎은 생고구마는 달착한 맛이 일품이었다.   

 

 

초겨울에는 얄팍하게 썬 고구마를 쪄서 꼬들꼬들하게 말렸었다.

먹거리가 귀하던 그 시절에는 쪄서 말린 고구마를 입에 넣고 불리면서 과자를 대신하기도 하였는데

농축된 단맛은 부지런히 주머니에 손을 들락거리게 하였다.
