자생의 자도나무(장미과 벚나무속) Prunus salicina Lindi.

강원도 양구지역에 자생한다는 자두나무를 한 번은 보고 싶던 차에 기회가 닿았다.

2017년 국립수목원에서 강원도 양구와 인제에 걸쳐 있는 대암산 일대에서

자두나무 기본종이 자생하고 있는 것을 확인하였다고 발표하였던 종이다.

 

자생하는 자도나무는 꽃자루가 짧고 굵은 점이 다르다고 한다.

100원짜리 동전 크기만 한 열매는 황록색으로 익는데 현지에서는 이 열매는 '괴타리'라 부른다고 한다.

내 어릴 적에는 자두나무 열매를 '고약'으로 불렀더랬는데 황록색으로 익는 작은 열매였던 것으로 기억이 된다.

 

자도나무 열매를 '고야' 라는 향명으로도 부르기도 하였단다.

'고야'는 '오얏'에서 유래되어 고야로 불려지게 된 게 아닐까 한다.

우리 속담 '오얏나무 아래서는 갓끈도 고쳐 쓰지 말라'는 그 '오얏'이 자두나무라는 것이다.

 

중학교 때 이사 간 큰 기와집 마당 한 켠에는 '추리나무'가 두어 그루 있었었다.

빨갛게 작 익은 열매는 껍질이 얇아서 잘 익은 열매는 괴육을 쪼옥 빨아서 먹기도 했는데

달콤하면서도 신맛이 꽤 강했더랬다.

그 '추리'는 지금의 개량된 자두보다는 열매가 훨씬 작았고 '고약'이라 부르던 녀석과는 또 다른 품종이었다.

 

올해는 자도나무 기본종의 꽃을 때를 놓치지 않고 담을 수 있어서 다행이었다.
