엽축에 날개가 있고 소엽이 붙은 자리에 가시가 있다.
열매는 공모양의 표면에 작은 돌기가 있는 삭과로
9-10월에 적갈색으로 익어서 주옥같은 종의를 뒤집어 쓴 흑색의 종자가 옆으로 튀어나온다
소지에 털이 없으며 탁엽이 변한 길이 1-2㎝정도인 한쌍의 편평한 가시가 있다.
엽병과 엽축에 넓은 날개가 있으며 엽병은 길이 1-3cm이다.
엽병의 기부나 새가지의 기부 근처에 길이 1-2㎝나 되는 한쌍의 가시가 있다.
