꾸지나무(뽕나무과) 암꽃

어릴 적 소죽을 끓이는 사랑방 가마솥 위에는 내 키보다 더 깊은 드럼통이 올려져 있었다.

그 드럼통에는 밭둑에서 잘라온 닥나무 가지가 둥그렇게 휘어져 있었다.

뜨거운 소죽이 식으면 드럼통을 내려서 닥나무 껍질을 벗겼다.

 

아버지를 도와서 동생과 함께 손가락이 아리도록 닥나무 껍질을 벗겼는데

그렇게 벗겨서 말린 닥나무 껍질은 수집상에게 넘겨서 일 없는 농촌 겨울 수입거리가 되었다.

그 닥나무가 바로 이 꾸지나무였다. 이 녀석은 암수딴그루로 붉은 말미잘 같은 꽃이 암꽃이다.
