굴참나무(참나무과) Quercus variabilis Blume

참나무과 낙엽 교목. 참나무 6형제 중에서 좁은잎으로 굴참나무, 상수리가 있다.

잎이 상수리와 거의 흡사하나

상수리의 잎은 끝이 좁고 날카롭게 빠지고 굴참나무잎은 끝이 둥그스름하게 빠진다

.

긴 타원형의 잎은 어긋나고 잎맥이 9~16쌍 나란히 나와 있으며 잎 가장자리에는 뾰족한 톱니가 나 있다.

잎 뒷면에는 별모양의 털이 빽빽하게 나 있다. 상수리나무는 잎 뒤에 별 모양의 털 대신에 단모(單毛)만 나와 있으며,

굴참나무는 잎 뒤가 회백색이나 상수리나무는 황록색이어서 쉽게 구분된다

.

열매는 둥글고 뒤로 젖혀진 많은 긴 포린(苞鱗)으로 싸여 있으며, 꽃이 핀 다음해 10월에 익는다.

 

굴참나무 수피는 참나무 종류 중에서 코르크 질이 두껍게 발달하여 있다. 껍질의 코르크를 힘 주어서 누르면 꾸욱 들어간다.

포도주 술병의 코르크 마개를 이 굴참나무 껍질로 만든다고 한다. 또 굴피지붕의 원료도 이 굴참나무 껍질로 한단다.

상수리 나무는 껍질의 갈라짐이 여백이 거의 없이 촘촘히 패어 있는데 비해 굴참나무는 깊고 듬성듬성 나 있다.

나무 나이가 15년 가량 되면 코르크 껍질이 약 1㎝ 정도로 두꺼워지는데, 이때부터 코르크 껍질을 벗겨낼 수 있다.

껍질을 벗겨내고 나서 약 8~9년이 지나면 다시 두꺼운 코르크 껍질이 생기는데, 약 40년 가량 될 때까지 벗겨낼 수 있다고 한다.
