사시나무(버드나무과 사시나무속) 새잎 Populus tremula L. var. davidiana (Dode) C.K.Schneid.

나지막한 가지에 붉은겨자색 사시나무 어린 잎이 잔 바람에 떨고 있다.

 

우리 말에  '온 몸이 사시나무 떨 듯 ' 이란 말이 있다.

잘못을 해 놓고 추궁을 당할 때 겁에 질려서 온몸을 떠는 모습이 마치 사시나무가 잎을 떠는 것 같다는 뜻이다. 

 

왜 미류나무도, 버드나무도 아니고 사시나무일까?

우리 나라 큰 산에 분포하는 사시나무는 선조들이 오래 전부터 함께 해 온 나무이고,

잎자루기 길고 탄력이 있어서 작은 진동이나 바람에도 흔들리기 쉬운 특징을 가지고 있다. 

 

그러니 다른 나무들의 잎은 떨림이 없는데도 사시나무 잎만 지 혼자 떠는 경우가 많이 보이다 보니

사시나무 잎을 빗대어 그런 말이 생겨난 것이라 하겠다.

 

사시나무와 은백양의 자연교잡으로 태어난 은사시나무도 있다.

 

깊은 산 습지에서 생육하며 높이 10m 내외에 달하는 큰 교목이다. 나무껍질은 오래되면 기부에서 얕게 세로로 터지며 회갈색이고, 어린가지에 털이 있다. 잎은 어긋나고, 잎자루는 길이 3~4cm로 편평하다. 잎몸은 난상 타원형 또는 넓은 난형으로 기부에 선체가 있다.
