예전에는 붉은색의 수액을 채취하여 가구의 도료로 사용하던 남부지역에 자생하는 수종이다
수령이 어린 유목의 잎은 결각이 많이 나타나는데 장령목은 거의 갈라지지 않는 상록수이다
최근에는 몸에 좋다고하는 이야기가 퍼지면서 자생지의 에서 수난을 많이 당하고 있다.
