제주도와 남부지방에 많이 분포하고 있는 수종이다.
수피에 상처를 내어서 흘러내리는 붉은 수액으로 가공하여 가구의 붉은 칠을 하여서 황칠나무라 한다.
수피 껍질은 갈라지지 않아 매끄럽고 어린 가지는 녹색으로 윤기가 있다.
어린 유목의 잎은 처음에는 3~5개로 갈라지나 자라면서 긴 타원형에 톱니가 없는 잎이 난다.
