어린 가지에 갈색털이 있고 잎 양면에 털이 있어서 털상동나무로 분류하기도 하는데
털은 점차 사라지기도 하므로 털상동나무로 정리하기도 애매하다.
줄기가 덩굴처럼 자라서 나무를 타고 오르기도 한다
가을에 꽃이 펴서 이듬해 봄에 열매가 흑자색으로 익는다.
아직은 열매가 자라지 않고 있지만 성급한 몇 개 제법 모양을 내고 있는 열매도 보인다
