박달나무(자작나무과 자작나무속) Betula schmidtii Regel

박달나무는 목질이 단단하여 순라꾼의 육모방망이를 박달나무로 만들었다는 이야기가 있다.

 

동해로 가기 위하여 울진 불영계곡과 통고산을 지나는데 박달나무가 엄청 많이 보인다.

마침 개화 시기라서 오랜만에 녀석의 꽃을 촬영하였다.

 

해발 고도 1,000m 이하의 산지에 자라는 낙엽 활엽수이다.

나무껍질은 암회색이고, 수령이 오래되면 두껍고 작은 조각으로 떨어진다.  

수꽃차례는 가지 끝에 달려서 아래로 처지며, 암꽃차례는 위로 서고 원통형이며 길이가 2~3cm이다.

 

잎은 어긋나고 난형으로 길이 4~8cm이며, 잎끝은 점차 뾰족해지고, 밑은 넓게 뾰족하다.

잎맥은 9~10쌍

 

 

 

어린 유목이나 청년목은 수피가 평활하지만 수령이 오래되면 두껍고 작은 조각으로 떨어진다.
