백두산 일대 하천가나 습원에서 볼 수 있다.
2m 까지 자라는데 습지에서 내 키높이 정도 개체를 관찰하여서 촬영하기는 수월하였다.
측맥이 5~7쌍 길이 3~3.5cm 정도의 광타원형의 작은 잎을 달고 있는데
처음에는 잎 양면에 털이 있지만 점차 탈락하여 맥 위에만 털이 남는다.
좀자작나무에 비하여 어린가지에 부드러운 잔털이 밀생하는데 이 녀석을 좀자작나무의 생태변이로 보기도 한다,
한반도 북부지방 양강도, 함경남도 등에 자생하며, 러시아, 일본 북해도, 중국(동북부) 등에 분포한다.
현재 국가표준식물목록에는 좀자작나무의 이명으로 처리되어 있다.
