용암이 분출된 작은 분화구에 물이 고여서 여러 개의 연못이 만들어져 있다.
연못은 등산로에 인접해 있어서 습지 식물을 만날 수 있었는데
그 부근 초지에서 용담속 녀석을 만났다.
크기가 작아서 비로용담 정도 크기였는데 도감에서 Gentiana nipponica 로 찾았다.
일본명 '미야마린도우' ミヤマリンドウ
북해도와 혼슈중부 이북에 분포하며 고산 아고산대 초치와 눈밭 초원에서 자란다.
높이가 3~8cm로 잎 길이 5~12mm 마주나기이다.
큐에서는 한반도에도 분포한다고 되어 있는데 아마도 정보 오류가 아닐까 한다.
백두산의 비로용담 Gentiana jamesii과는 약간의 차이가 있는 것 같다.
이 학명이 국가표준식물목록에 없는 거라 생각하고 확인을 안 했더니 표준식물목록에 올려진 멧용담의 학명이었다.
한라산에 있다는 멧용담이 국립수목원의 이미지 자료로 검색이 되는데, 그래서 큐에서 멧용담의 분포지를 한반도에도 표시했던 모양이다.
헌데 한라산 녀석의 사진을 보면 꽃받침 열편이 가늘고 화관의 부속체도 거의 안 보이고 화관이 꽃받침에 비하여 무척 길고 잎도 더 가는 피침형이라 대설산 멧용담 녀석과 차이가 크다. 한라산 녀석은 용담의 소형으로 보인다. 아무래도 한라산 녀석에 오동정된 것 같다.
