길이가 40cm(~100) 인 대단히 큰 화서와 잎을 가진 수목 중의 하나로
어린 순을 식용하기 위하여 민가에서 주로 심는 녀석이다
10~22개의 짝수깃꼴 잎을 가지고 있으며 맥 위와 맥액에 갈색 털이 있고 소엽 가장자리 성글게 톱니가 있거나 밋밋하다.
경북 북부지역에서는 이 녀석의 새순나물을 가죽나물이라 불러서
소태나무과의 가죽나무와 혼돈을 일으키게 하기도 하는데
가죽나무의 새순은 악취가 나서 식용을 하지 않는다.
