20~100cm정도로 자라는 유채만큼 대형의 유럽원산 귀화식물이다.
꽃과 전초의 모습은 마치 갓, 유채와 흡하하여서 얼핏 알아보기 쉽지가 않다.
열매에 주름이 있고 열매자루가 화축에 붙어 있어서 갓이나 유채와 구분이 된다.
열매는 화축 가까이에서 위를 향하며 달리고, 두 마디로 구분되는데
아래쪽은 원통형으로 길이 1~3mm, 위쪽은 구형 또는 난형으로세로 주름이 있다.
마악 어린 열매가 자라기 시작하는데 결실기에는 열매 표면에 세로로 쭈글쭈글한 주름이 생긴다.

갓은 주름구슬냉이와 달리 열매가 화축에서 벌어져 있어서 열매가 익기 전에 구분할 수가 있다.
갓 열매는 화축에서 이렇게 멀어져 있고 열매 아랫부분에 구형의 부분이 없다.
중앙부에 거센 털이 있으며 위쪽에는 털이 없다.
뿌리잎은 길이 1~5cm의 잎자루가 있으며, 잎몸은 길이 20cm쯤으로 가장자리는 깃꼴로 갈라진다.
