으아리속 중에서 가장 일찍 꽃이 피는데 볕이 잘 드는 산사면이나 능선부, 무덤 주변을 좋아한다
참으아리 : 꽃받침이 4개, 잎 끝이 뾰족하지 않고 둥그스름 한 것. 열매 잔털이 있고 깃털을 가진 긴 암술대가 있음
으아리 : 꽃받침잎이 4~5개이고 잎 끝이 뾰족 한 것. 열매에 백색 털이 있는 길이 2cm 정도의 꼬리같은 암술대가 있음
조령으아리 : 꽃받침이 6개인 것. 열매가 납작하고 날개 있으며 짧은 암술대가 돌기처럼 나 있음
외대으아리 : 꽃받침이 4~5장인 것. 열매에 털이 없고, 날개 있으며 짧은 암술대가 돌기처럼 달려 있음
대구으아리 : 꽃받침잎이 4~6개인 것, 납작한 열매에 3cm정도의 암술대에 흰털이 있음
꽃잎처럼 보이는 꽃받침잎이 4~5장으로
화경에 꽃이 3~4개 정도로 성글게 달리고 열매 끝에 짧은 암술이 돌기만 남아 있는 특징이 있다.
