열매가 완두콩 꼬투리 처럼 생겼다. 새완두도 아니고 그렇다고 살갈퀴도 아닌 어정쩡하게 중간형이라고 얼치기 완두라고 한단다.
콩과 덩굴성 식물은 꼬투리 모양이 거의 비슷한데 이 녀석 꼬투리가 납작한 완두콩 꼬투리를 가장 많이 닮은 모양이다.
잎은 엽병이 거의 없으며 우수우상복엽이고 소엽은 6-12개이며 선상 긴 타원형이고 길이 12~17mm 폭2~4mm로서
끝의 것은 덩굴손으로 된다. 탁엽은 긴 타원형으로서 창을 세로로 자른듯한 모양이며 선이 없다.
열매는 협과로 긴 타원형 또는 타원형이고 털이 없다. 길이 8~10mm 나비 4mm로서 3~6개의 종자가 들어 있다.
뒤쪽에 보이는 2개씩 달린 열매는 새완두 열매다.
