제주의 길섶 풀밭에는 선개불알풀이 지천으로 꽃을 피우고 있다.
안동에서는 댐 부근 공터에서 볼 수 있는데 얼마 전 가 보았을 때는 아직 싹이 보이지 않았었다.
눈개불알풀을 만나려고 헤맸지만 눈개불알은 그리 흔하지 않아서 만나지 못하였다.
자세히 들여다 봐야만 꽃이란 걸 알 수 있는 파란 꽃이 참 곱다.
꽃은 벽자색이고 엽액에 달리며 꽃받침은 길이 4-6mm로서 4개로 갈라지고 열편은 피침형이며 삭과보다 길거나 비슷하다. 화관은 지름 4mm로서 4개로 갈라진다. 수술 2개 암술 1개이다. 암술대가 짧다.
삭과는 도심장형이며 끝이 깊게 파지고 나비 4mm정도이며 편평하고 가장자리에 선모가 있으며 종자는 20개 내외이다. 개불알풀 종류는 열매의 모양 때문에 이름이 붙었다고 할 수 있다. 줄기 위쪽의 잎은 호생한다.
높이 10-30cm이고 밑에서 갈라져 곧게 자라며 짧은 털이 있다.
잎은 대생하고 엽병이 없으며 넓은 난형 삼각상 난형 또는 난형이고 길이 1~2cm 폭 7~15mm로서
끝이 둔하며 밑부분이 둥글고 가장자리에는 3~4쌍의 톱니가 있으며 양면에 털이 밀생한다.
꽃이 달리는 윗부분의 잎은 호생하고 점점 작아진다.
