풀 숲에 엉겨 피는 덩굴성 콩과 중에 그래도 꽃이 고운 녀석이다.
어디서나 흔하게 볼 수 있는 살갈퀴는 갯완두처럼 붉은색의 꽃이 잎겨드랑이에서 핀다.
꽃은 5월경에 피며 길이 12~18mm로서 홍자색이고 엽액에 1-2개의 꽃이 달리며 꽃받침은 길이 8-12mm로서 5개로 뾰족하게 갈라진다
소엽은 도란형 또는 넓은 난형이며 절두, 요두 또는 미철두이고 둔저이며 길이 2-3cm, 나비 4-6mm로서 측맥은 예각이고
가장자리에 잔털이 나며 밋밋하다. 탁엽은 2개로 갈라지며 흔히 톱니가 있고 1개의 선이 있다.
열매는 협과로 편평하고 털이 없으며 길이 3~4cm로서 흑색 종자가 10개정도 들어 있다.
