화서는 총상이지만(싸리나무는 긴 총상화서) 짧기 때문에 두상같이 보이고 화축에 밀모가 있으며,
꽃은 7-9월부터 엽액에서 피기 시작하여 서리가 내리기 직전까지 계속하여 홍자색으로 피고 소화경은 길이 1-4mm이다.
소지에 능선이 있다.
잎은 호생하고 3출엽이며 소엽은 원형, 도란형 또는 타원형이고 길이 2-5㎝로서 잎 끝은 요두(凹頭) 또는 원두(圓頭)이며 원저(圓底)이다.
표면에 털이 있으나 점차 없어지며 뒷면은 회록색으로서 잔털이 있고 엽병은 짧다
