육지의 바위에 서식하는 애기석위 보다 개체 크기가 매우 크다.
엽신은 넓은 피침형 또는 난상 피침형으로서 양끝이 좁고 두꺼우며 표면은 짙은 녹색으로서 털이 없으나 뒷면은 갈색이 도는 성상모가 밀생하고 중륵이 뚜렷하게 도드라진다. 가장자리는 약간 파상이다.
