새삼(메꽃과 새삼속)

뿌리도 잎도 없는 한해살이 덩굴성 식물로 다른 식물에 기생하여 꽃과 열매를 맺는 특성이 있다.

전체가 황색의 굵은 철사 모양으로 목본(木本)식물에 기생하여 번식을 하는데 싹이 나서

기생식물에 이르면 뿌리는 마르고 새로 생긴 흡반(吸盤)으로 기생식물의 영양을 흡수해서 성장한다.

8,9월 경에 줄기 위에 짧은 이삭으로 백색의 잔꽃이 모여서 핀다.

무리지어 번식하는 모양은 마치 풀이나 나무 위에 황금그물을 덮어씌운 것 같다.

새삼의 씨를 토사자라 하고 한방에서는 중요한 한약제로 쓰인다.
