유럽 원산의 귀화식물이며 길가나, 목장 주변에서 자라는 여러해살이풀로 땅속줄기는 길게 뻗는다.
도로변을 따라 많이 퍼져 있는 것 같다. 선자령 입구에서도 무리진 모습을 본 적 있다.
줄기는 여러 대가 모여나고, 높이 30~100cm이며, 마디가 3~5개 있다.
