남부지방의 공원이나 정원수로 많이 심는다

난상타원형으로 잎끝이 뾰족하고 상하좌우 마주나며 뒷면에 삼각상 점 모양의 백색 기공선이 있다

구과 열매 형태가 편백과 비슷하나 더 작으며, 잎 끝이 뾰족하고 뒷면의 기공선이 삼각상 점 모양(W)) 이나 나비모양을 띤다.

가지가 가늘고 아래로 늘어지는 변종을 실화백으로 구분하기도 한다.

이 녀석도 가지가 아래로 늘어지는 모습이니 실화백이라 불러도 된다.
