이 녀석은 남쪽 지역에서는 흔하게 만날 수 있는 지피식물이다.
금란초로도 불리는 이 녀석은 물결성 거치를 가진 잎이 방석처럼 퍼지는데 잎 겨드랑이에 자그마한 자색의 꽃이 귀엽다.
자란초속으로 조개나물, 금창초, 자란초가 있는데 꽃색이 짙은 자색으로 피는 지리금란초도 있다.
근생엽은 방사상으로 퍼지며 넓은 도피침형이고 둔두이며 길이 4-6cm, 나비 1-2cm로서 짙은 녹색이지만
흔히 자줏빛이 돌고 밑으로 점차 좁아지며 가장자리에 둔한 파상의 톱니가 있다.
