전남 및 경남의 해안이나 도서지방의 산록에 자생하고 표고 150~1,100m에서 자란다.
잎은 대생하고 넓은 난형, 넓은 타원형 또는 난상 긴 타원형이며 예두 또는 둔두이고 원저 또는 예저이며 암록색에 두껍고 혁질이며 광택이 난다. 잎 길이는 3~8cm, 폭은 2.5~4.5㎝이며 때에 따라서 10cm 정도이고 뒷면에 뚜렷하지 않은 잔점이 있고 가장자리가 밋밋하다.
당광나무보다 한달 정도 빠른 6월에 개화를 하며 화관 열편이 당광나무보다 짧고 옆으로 퍼진다(당광나무는 열편이 뒤로 말린다)
잎의 앞면 주맥은 오목하고 뒷면은 적갈색으로 돌출한다. 측맥은 당광나무에 비하여 희미하다
광나무의 잎은 (3~8cm, 폭은 2.5~4.5㎝)로 당광나무보다(길이 5-12cm, 폭 3-5cm) 잎이 작다
엽병은 엽맥과 더불어 적갈색이 나며 길이는 5~12mm이고, 뒷면은 황록색을 띤다.
높이 3-5m이고 가지는 회색 또는 회갈색이며 피목이 뚜렷하고 분지한다.
광나무의 잎은 주앙부가 가장 넓은데 당광나무 잎은 하부가 가장 넓다.
