강원도 높은 산에서 만난 이름 붙이기 어려운 녀석을 두고 니가 벌사상자가 아니냐고 윽박지르면서 실토하라고 다그친 적이 있다.
결국 그 녀석은 산형과 어디에도 찾을 수 없는 이름 없는 녀석으로 포기하고 말았는데
어떤 녀석 꽃잎 벌리기를 기다리면서 논둑을 살피다가 마악 개화를 하고 있는 벌사상자를 제대로 만났다.
열매가 없어서 아쉬웠지만 잎과 꽃차례와 총포를 찬찬히 담을 수 있어서 다행이다.
주로 북부지방에 자란다는데 남부지역 산지에도 서식을 한단다.

꽃잎은 끝이 오목하게 갈라지고 5장의 꽃잎 크기가 다르며 꽃밥이 보라색을 띤다.
꽃술은 꽃잎보다 더 길다.
선형의 총포와 소총포가 많다.
잎은 심열하여 깊게 갈라지고 열편은 선형이다.
소산형화서는(작은꽃차례)이 15-30개이고 지름 5-10mm이고 10-20여 개의 꽃이 있으며
소산경에는 털이 없고 소산형화서를 받치고 있는 소총포도 9~11개의 송곳모양의 긴 삼각형으로 총포와 같은 형태이다
총포는 길고 가는 삼각형 모양으로 8-11개 정도이며 총포 중간에 1개의 맥이 있고 털이 있으며 가장자리가 막질이다.
총포와 소총포 모두 털이 있다. 총산경에도 잔털이 있다.
6-7월에 흰꽃이 복산형화서로 핀다.
화서의 지름은 2-5cm이고 소산형화서는 15-30개이며 가장자리에 흰털이 있는 8-11개의 선형의 총포편이 있다.
근생엽과 줄기 밑부분 잎의 엽병은 짧고 밑이 엽초로 되며 개화기에 없어진다.
줄기 윗부분 잎의 엽병은 엽초로 된다. 열편 끝에 흰 까끄라기가 있다.
잎은 호생하며 삼각상 난형이고 3회 우상으로 잘게 갈라지며 최종 열편은 선형이고 길이 2-10mm, 폭 1-2mm로서
가장자리가 뒤로 말려 두꺼워지며 짙은 녹색이고 끝이 뾰족하며 짧고 흰 까끄라기가 달린다.
높이가 1m에 달하고 줄기는 곧추 서며 밑부분은 때때로 자줏빛을 띠고 털이 있으며
윗부분은 털이 없고 가지를 치며 속이 비고 세로로 능선이 있다.
