바닷가에 사는 명아주과로 가는갯능쟁이 보다 잎이 더 넓은 녀석이다.
흰명아주의 변종인 잎피 좁은 타원형 또는 넓은 피침형인 가는명아주 어린 싹이 아닐까 하는데......
잎은 호생하며 난상 삼각형, 난형 또는 피침형이고 끝이 뾰족하며 밑부분이 창검과 비슷하고
가장자리에 크고 불규칙한 톱니가 있으나 위로 갈수록 작아지며 밋밋하고 표면은 녹색이며 뒷면은 흰빛이 돈다.
꽃은 7~8월에 피고 연한 녹색이며 한군데에 모여 달리지만 가지 전체로서는 수상화서같이 보인다.
꽃잎은 없고 단성화이며 수꽃에 포가 없고 꽃받침이 5개로 갈라지며 5개의 수술이 각 열편과 대생한다.
