산층층이가 꽃을 피우기 시작하였다. 길섶에 저 혼자 피어 있다.
이 녀석은 자색이 강한 꽃받침과 층층으로 돌려난 화서가 특징이다.
꽃은 백색이고 7-8월에 피며 원줄기 끝과 가지끝에 많은 꽃이 층층으로 달리고 포는 선형이며 길이 5-8mm로서 긴 털이 있다.
꽃받침은 5개로 갈라지고 길이 6-8mm로서 짧은 선모가 있고 화관에는 겉에 잔털이 있고 길이 8-12mm로서 순형이다.
잎은 대생하며 난형 또는 긴 난형이고 첨두 원저이며 길이 2-4cm, 폭 1-2.5cm로서 가장자리에 톱니가 있고 엽병은 길이 2-20mm이다.
줄기는 전체에 짧은 털이 있으며 녹색이고 붉은빛이 돌지 않는다. 원줄기는 네모가 지고 밑부분이 약간 옆으로 자라다가 위로 곧추선다.
