밭에 심어 기르거나 야생화하여 들에서 절로 자라는 한해살이풀이다.

들깨와 비교하여 잎이 짙은 자주색을 띠며 씨는 황갈색을 띠므로 다르다. 차즈기, 차조기라고도 부른다.
