나도미국외풀, 미국외풀, 가는미국외풀을 모두 미국외풀로 통합해서 보는 견해도 있고
이 녀석을 미국외풀로 통합헤서 보는 견해도 있는데,
현재는 국가표준식물목록에 나도미국외풀이 미국외풀의 이명으로 처리가 되어 있다. 그러나 나도미국외풀의 잎 모양은 확실히 더 넓은 난형으로 톱니도 희미하여서, 도란형의 잎에 물결성톱니를 가진 미국외풀과는 외형적으로 차이가 있다. 외국에서도 이 녀석을 미국외풀의 변종 또는 아종으로 독립 종으로 보고 있다.
외형적으로도 나도미국외풀을 독립된 분류군으로 보는게 맞다고 생각한다
