그늘사초에 비하여 꽃대가 아주 짧아서 꽃대가 올라왔는지 알지 못할 정도이다.
잎은 편평하지만 때로는 약간 안으로 말리며
나비 0.5-1.5mm로서 (그늘사초는 폭 1.5-2mm)
흔히 머리카락처럼 가늘며 밑부분의 엽초는 짙은 적갈색이고 섬유상으로 갈라진다.
