Cassiope lycopodioides 한 학명을 가지며 일본명 '이와히게' イワヒゲ ' 로 암자( 岩髭) '바위수염'이란 뜻을 가지고 있다.
이 녀석은 긴 꽃자루에 초롱꽃처럼 고개를 아래로 숙이고 하얀 꽃을 피우고 있는데
긴 띠 처럼 생긴 줄기를 따라 비늘잎이 줄기에 붙어 있는데 바위와 지표를 뒤덮고 있다.
구로다케 정상부에 올랐다면 풍성한 꽃을 볼 수 있을텐데, 아사히다케에서 겨우 몇 송이 만났다.
알래스카 알류샨 제도, 브리티시컬럼비아 일본 캄차카 쿠릴 제도, 사할린, 워싱턴까지 자생한다.
