북부지방하천가나 숲가장자리에 자라는 소교목이다.

야광나무 오타가 아니라 산사나무속 아광나무이다.

산사나무에 비하여 잎 가장자리에 결각이 얕고 잎 뒷면과 꽃차례에 털이 많다.
